Uber Wins Court Approval to Continue Operating in London

Image
The company was granted a 15-month probationary license. Press Association via AP Images Uber has won the right to keep operating in London, at least temporarily. Judge Emma Arbuthnot of Westminster Magistrates" Court granted the ride-hailing company a probationary license subject to review every 15 months. Uber will also be subject to more regulatory scrutiny. Transport for London (TfL), the British capital"s transportation agency, declined to renew Uber"s operating license when it expired last fall. The agency cited concerns about certain Uber policies, including background checks and reporting of crimes committed by Uber drivers. Uber appealed the decision, and has been allowed to continue operating in London during the appeals process. Under the terms of the decision, Uber must provide TfL with an independently-verified audit of its operations every six months. The decision also lays out rules for how Uber must report crimes committed by its drivers, complaints fro

Rally Drivers Think WRC Should Do Away with "Stupid" Artificial Jumps

Image
Competitors come together to speak out against man-made jumps that they say cause crashes. ANDREAS SOLARO—AFP/Getty Images While cars only take to the air in NASCAR and Formula 1 after something has already gone incredibly wrong, in the World Rally Championship it is a routine occurrence and part of the sport"s appeal. However, drivers are speaking out against the artificial jumps that have been added to some recent rally stages as being unnecessary and dangerous, reports Motorsport.com . "We all agreed as drivers, it"s not clever to build these artificial, short, kicking jumps in the middle of a long straight," WRC champion Sebastien Ogier told Motorsport.com . "I have nothing against jumps, I love it and they can make as many jumps as they want, but make them progressive and not the ramp so sharp and short. We come in sixth gear and it"s stupid." At last weekend"s Rally Italia Sardegna, Toyota driver Ott Tanak hit one of these jumps on the Mon

Get serious on border protection

Image
<!-- SHOW ARTICLE --> To the editor: If our government is really serious about protecting our borders; here’s my take on keeping illegal drugs and criminals from crossing our borders. First of all catch and release without punishment is stupid. Is the reward of getting caught crossing our borders worth the risk, yes? If people knew crossing our border illegally could get them shot on sight would the reward still be worth the risk, absolutely not? So what will it be an expensive Trump wall or bridges? Wall first: For a much lower cost than a wall, two sixteen foot high chain link fences with razor wire on the top could be installed one hundred feet apart; like at a prison. Instead of towers with armed guards there would be machine gun torrents on high towers. As with killer drones I believe a system could be created that would include cameras and motion detectors so to worn anyone that gets near the fence about getting shot. If they did get in the DMZ (dead man zone) that space

Philippine President Duterte, leader of Asia"s largest Catholic country, sparks outrage after calling God a "stupid son of ...

Image
The Philippine president, notorious for having cursed the pope and world leaders like former US President Barack Obama, has sparked new outrage by calling God "stupid" in Asia"s largest Catholic country. Opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV shot back Monday by describing President Rodrigo Duterte as "one evil man" and his remarks as "very much consistent with the deceitfulness, heartlessness and ruthlessness of his policies". Even some of Duterte"s political allies were critical. A Catholic Bishop, Arturo Bastes, called the president a "madman" and urged Filipinos to pray for an end to Duterte"s "blasphemous utterances and dictatorial tendencies". "Duterte"s tirade against God and the Bible reveals again that he is a psychological freak, a psychopath, an abnormal mind who should have not been elected as president of our civilised and Christian nation," Mr Bastes said. Another bishop, Ruperto Santos, said

America"s Dumbest Criminals: Ark. Man Tried Paying Waitress for Food With HER Stolen Credit Card

Welcome back to America’s favorite game show, “America’s Dumbest Criminals!” For your submission today we have the case of 21-year-old Shamon West. West stole the purse of Pine Bluff, Ark,. waitress Flora Lunsford on Sunday. Two days later West was in jail. Why, you might ask? Literally two days after West stole Lunsford’s purse which also had her driver"s license and social security card, he thought it would be a great idea to go to the restaurant that Lunsford works at and pay for his meal using one of her credit cards. The police department couldn’t believe West’s stupidity, as evidenced by their comment on the case: “As a side note, the driver’s license, as all do, had her picture on it," the police department said, according to KATV - Little Rock. "Therefore, you would think he should have known what she looked like. Yet, he still handed her own credit card to her.” Police say surveillance video from a local gas station showed West stealing Lunsford’s purse o

Perth woman suffers freak shark bite on finger during Kimberley boat trip

Image
MELISSA Brunning was on a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip cruising the majestic Kimberley on a friend’s superyacht, so when an opportunity arose to feed a placid shark she was scared, but her adventurous spirit willed her to give it a go. But it all ended in a freak shark bite incident that left the Perth woman grateful she didn’t lose a finger. The last of her friends to try feeding the three to four Tawny nurse sharks hanging around the back of the boat, what Ms Brunning didn’t realise until it was too late was that she shouldn’t hand feed the 2m shark, rather place the piece of fish in front of her and watch it go by and suck it up. WATCH: The frightening incident in the player above. With a suction “like a Hoover”, the shark sucked Ms Brunning’s right index finger into its mouth full of rows of razor sharp teeth. Camera Icon Melissa Brunning prepares to feed the shark. Picture: Supplied Mobile phone footage filmed by a friend of the incident at the end of May shows Ms Brunning screaming

John Bercow will not be investigated over "stupid woman" row

Image
John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons , will not be investigated by the standards watchdog over allegations that he described the cabinet minister Andrea Leadsom as a “stupid woman”. The Conservative MP James Duddridge, a long-standing critic of Bercow, had called for the standards commissioner to secure video and audio footage of the alleged incident in the Commons chamber last month before it was destroyed. However, Kathryn Stone, the commissioner, is prevented from investigating the alleged conduct because under parliamentary rules it is the Speaker’s responsibility to rule on behaviour in the chamber. Bercow has sought to defuse the row by admitting he muttered the word “stupid” during a disagreement with the leader of the house about the timetabling of legislation, but denied insulting her personally. He offered no apology and insisted he would “continue to speak out firmly” for the interests of the Commons. Commons Speaker John Bercow admits using the word "stu

Stupid Batshuayi hit post for extra followers, jokes Mertens

Image
Dries Mertens joked that Michy Batshuayi is a "stupid guy" and suggested he smashed the ball into his own face to gain more social media followers.  Batshuayi went viral after an attempted goal celebration during the 1-0 World Cup defeat of England went wrong, the striker smashing the ball against the post and not able to duck away in time when it rebounded into his face. "Ahahha I knew I would be f***** the minute I come to my mentions. Why am I so stupid bro. S*** hurts," Batshuayi wrote on Twitter, going on to share a clip of the bizarre moment. "Fortnite celebrations [are] so overrated bro I had to create something new." And Batshuayi"s Belgium colleagues do not have much sympathy for their luckless team-mate. "He [Batshuayi] is a bit of a stupid guy, we like to joke with him," Mertens told a news conference. "I think he is very funny on social media and everything and I don"t know if he did it for extra followers or something

Is Maxine Waters What the Democrats Really Represent

Image
Share this article There is a lot of crazy political stuff on TV news and social media these days. The out-in-far-left-field anti-Trump Occupy Democrats are the looniest of the loony tunes out there. Their hateful ‘red-meat’ rants on social media repeated on TV news demonstrate a continuing and deepening break from reality right in there solidly with the likes of California Democrat U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, who is publicly advocating the public harassment of anyone connected with the administration of President Donald Trump and people are acting upon her hatred. Incidents of public harassment are all over TV news and on social media involving Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen — that have received the most attention. Sanders and family were asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia, Bondi and boyfriend were screamed at while entering a movie theater in Florida while Nielsen, who was having a work-related din

Analysis: I took AAA"s distracted driving road test. It wasn"t pretty.

Image
A brief run around a test track with AAA researchers demonstrated just how stupid we human beings can become while using smart technology to get around. At least I was. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety"s hands-on demonstration infotainment and navigation systems also showed why efforts to combat distracted driving could be making it worse -- and how the auto industry, smartphone makers and the federal government (and yes, most of the public) have decided to sacrifice a certain number of lives for everyday convenience. The simulated road test -- conducted in a Prince George"s County, Maryland, church parking lot with researchers from the University of Utah -- was designed to highlight the findings of a new AAA report on the relative merits of different navigation systems for vehicles. AAA teamed with the University of Utah to study the relative efficiency of infotainment and navigation systems -- those that come preloaded in vehicles and those developed by Apple C

Conservatism is not bigotry

Image
I support Simi Valley City Council filing an amicus letter supporting the United States’ action against California State Sanctuary laws, for these reasons: 1. Safety. Simi is a relatively safe community. Harboring criminals will not keep our residents, whether legal or illegal, safe from criminal predators. Sanctuary laws protect criminals, encouraging them to remain in sanctuary communities. 2. This isn’t a “race” issue, it’s a safety issue. Too many Americans have been killed by illegal aliens. If the illegals weren’t in the country, those killed would still be alive, and their families wouldn’t be suffering. 3. Statistically speaking, it is a fact that sanctuary communities have higher crime rates, both property crimes (burglaries and auto break-ins) and physical crimes (murders, robberies, rapes) than neighboring communities that aren’t sanctuary communities. 4. The United States was founded on laws. Everyone in America is subject to the same laws (apparently with the exception of

Philippine President Duterte calls God a "son of a bitch" in controversial speech

Image
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has sparked controversy in the predominantly Catholic country for calling God "stupid," but his spokesman has defended the contentious statement as his personal belief. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Source: Associated Press/Bullit Marquez Duterte made the statement on Friday evening during a speech in his southern home city of Davao, where he questioned God"s logic in the Biblical creation story of Adam and Eve. "Adam ate (the fruit of knowledge), then malice was born. Who is this stupid God?" he said. "That son of a bitch is stupid if that"s the case. You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work." Duterte also questioned the rationale of original sin, noting, "That was your mother and father"s deed - you weren"t born yet, but now you have original sin. What kind of religion is that? I can"t accept i

Duterte"s "God is stupid" comments bring yet more shame on his office

Image
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (Getty Images) It"s not the first example of Duterte"s invective, but it is the worst yet Pity the poor bishops of the Philippines, and the poor Filipino Catholics, who have had to endure yet another embarrassing outburst from President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte has now waded into controversy by calling God “stupid” . It seems that in one of his televised speeches the President decided to have a go at explaining the story of Adam and Eve. Not a wise move at all. The President has form on this matter. At various times in the past he has raged against several world figures, including Pope Francis. Time magazine has made a list of all these insults, and it makes sad reading. This month’s addition is the worst yet. Mr Duterte is now 73, so it is unlikely that he is going to grow up any time soon. In the meantime, the people of the Philippines, and the rest of us, must put up with him. He has, it is surely fair to say, brought shame on his office

Man in court: "I"m not that stupid"

Image
THE circumstances which saw a man move a car 5m off the road while intoxicated, in full view of police, will be examined, after a magistrate declined to hand down a sentence while the facts were in dispute. Alan Lawson Brown appeared in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to one count of being in charge of a car while over the alcohol limit. Bundaberg police prosecutor Senior Contestable Klaassen told the court on April 30 at Agnes Water, Brown was the passenger in a car pulled over by police for a random breath test. With the car left on the side of Round Hill Rd, the court heard police warned a clearly drunk Brown that if he got behind the wheel he would be breathalysed. "He (Brown) then asked if he could wind up the window and secure the vehicle before he was observed to get in the vehicle and move it 5m forward and down an embankment," Snr Const Klaassen said. The court heard police charged Brown after he was then breathalysed and bl

God: "Who is this stupid man?"

I once had a classmate who got into trouble when he wore a shirt to school with the words “God is dead—Nietzsche” in front. Not exactly the kind of message welcomed in a Catholic boys’ high school. Many of us (including teachers and administrators) were stopped by, and responded to, the provocation in front. But, in fact, his shirt was an elaborate joke. At the back of the shirt was another message. It read: “Nietzsche is dead—God.” I remembered this slice of life from 40 years ago when I heard about President Duterte’s latest outburst against the Christian (and Judaic) God. Among (many) other lies and half-truths he said last Friday, he gave a critique of the Creation story in Genesis. He recounted the story of Adam and Eve and the serpent in the garden (comparing it to government employees: “Pareho diyan sa—karamihan diyan sa gobyerno ganun man”), and embellished it with his trademark vulgar language and his own jokes (the apple the serpent gave Eve, he said, was wrapped in “parang f

Popular brand facing backlash after pulling boys" jumper from shelves

Image
Popular pyjama and clothing brand Peter Alexander has removed a boys" jumper from the market after receiving complaints from parents.  Featured in the brand"s children"s section, the grey jumper was emblazoned with the slogan "boys will be boys" .  After spotting the pyjama top in store, Melbourne mum Bridie Harris made a complaint to the company on social media. Stella Donnelly - "Boys Will Be Boys" "Boy won’t be boys," she wrote on Facebook on June 20. "Boys will be held accountable for their actions. I hate to see an Australian store, who makes such great pjs, put such a sexist statement on a t-shirt intended for young boys. Excusing boys of their behaviour is not a step in the right direction. It’s 2018." In response, Peter Alexander has taken the jumper off the market.  But not everyone is happy about it  By pleasing one group of customers, Peter Alexander has succeeded in royally ticking off some others.  "Shame on you
