Cops arrest man for making terrorist threats on social media
A Bronx man was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats Sunday after a photo of him holding a handgun next to a police car appeared on social media, along with a hateful screed, authorities said.
The photo, which was posted to Facebook on Friday, shows Kelvin Rodriguez, 21, holding a handgun in front of a marked police car from the 45th Precinct as another unidentified man speaks to cops through the window of the cruiser.
The photo was captioned “Stupid dumb ass ni—-s fuck the 45,” police sources said.
Police then scoured the precinct for Rodriguez, who was found riding a bike against traffic on Frisby Avenue near Rowland Street on Saturday night, police said. Cops busted him for resisting arrest and criminal possession of a controlled substance. They determined he was the person in the photo, and added criminal possession of a weapon and making terrorist threats, police said.
Rodriguez has one previous arrest for criminal possession of a controlled substance in Oct. 2017, police said.
Law-enforcement sources said the photo is an alarming example of the threats police officers face on a daily basis.
“In light of what’s happened in the last two years, this could’ve been a very bad situation,” one source said. “Cops often face verbal threats, this was much more real.”
Another source noted it could’ve been a “Ramos and Liu situation” if Rodriguez had turned the gun on the officers, referring to the two Brooklyn cops who were slain as they sat in a patrol car in 2014.
Soon after officers Ramos and Liu were killed, a Brooklyn gang member was arrested for making a threat to police on social media.
Devon Coley, 18, was charged in 2014 with making a terroristic threat after he posted on his Facebook page “73Next” – a reference to the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville — beside a cartoon showing an arm pointing a gun at a police officer’s head.
