Dog owner speaks out after workmen smash car widows to free pets left in baking hot vehicle

A dog owner has spoken out after workmen smashed his car widows to free three pets left in the baking hot vehicle.

Worried members of the public told police the dogs had been in the car for nearly two hours, before helping to break into the drivers side window to release them.

All windows of the car were reportedly shut as temperatures reached 27C outside in Bristol on Thursday, July 26.

Now the dog owner has revealed it was "stupid" of him to leave the animals in the hot car.

A crowd had gathered around the silver Nissan car near Old Market Roundabout after hearing the dogs were left on their own.

A police officer and members of the public could be seen holding a blanket over the boot window to try and provide some shade for the dogs, reports the Bristol Post .

Around 12.45pm, a workman decided to use a lump hammer to smash the window to provide water and ventilation for the animals.

The driver was spoken to by a police officer at the scene. After the story came to light, he told Bristol Live he was “stupid” to have left the dogs unattended.

But he disputed the witnesses" version of events, and added: “At most, they were in the car for an hour.

“If it was an hour, break the window, fair enough. I will admit to leaving the window shut - that was stupidity on my part.”

He claimed he had left the dogs in the car to go to Cabot Circus but a nearby Bristol Waste worker - who called the police - was playing with his three pets.

“I was panicking because she kept trying to talk to the dogs and they were trying to jump out of the car,” the driver, who did not want to be named, added.

“I wanted to provide shade for them and as the dogs kept trying to jump onto the main road, I was more interested in keeping them safe,” he explained.

“I admit I forgot to open the window. That was my stupidity. My partner and I would have done the same - smashing the car window. I’m glad they did that.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police confirmed the force will not be pressing any charges against the workman who broke the window, although it might be different for the driver.

He said: “We were called to reports of three dogs distressed in a car at about 12.15pm outside Castle Park in Tower Hill in Bristol. There were no windows open.

“Members of the public have broken into the car shortly before the car owner returned. No action is being taken against the members of the public.

“We will give consideration of what action - if any - needs to be taken against the vehicle owner.”

Lisa Eastment, from Bristol Waste, was on duty when she spotted the dog.

“I stopped on the side of the road to do one of my jobs. As I stopped, the chap had the back boot opened, and I asked if they were going to be alright,” she said, shortly after the incident.

“He said the shop did not allow dogs and he had given them some water. I kept on coming round every half hour.

“They have been in there since 10.40pm and there has always been someone here to make sure.

“We’ve done everything we could. We rang the police, the RSPCA.

"I will put my hand up and say we agreed to smash the window because it was necessary and I would do it again in a second.”
