"Stupid" thrill-seeker goes swimming with Great White Shark off Sydney"s coast

A man has filmed himself swimming alongside a Great White Shark off Sydney’s coast.

Jai Kiggins filmed the daring exploit with the help of brother Kurt while they were swimming at Wattamolla Beach in the Royal National Park.

The pair were drawn to investigate after being tipped off about a shark feeding frenzy involving a giant whale carcass that had washed up on rocks.

"Probably one of the craziest things I"ve ever seen you know,” Jai told 9NEWS.

“The great white came straight up like, face to face and then just turned and kicked away.”

Jai admits that while approaching the shark was not the “smartest” move, “if you"ve got the balls to do it, I don"t see why not".

Kurt added their mother “wasn’t very happy” about their decision, while National Parks and Wildlife spokesman Shaun Elwood has condemned the stunt as “stupid”.

Mr Elwood discourages any members of the public from approaching sharks and other dangerous wildlife.

Mr Elwood believes the whale carcass belongs to a rare Sei Whale, estimated to run about 20m in length and to weigh 40 tonnes.

He said the cause of the whale’s death is not known.

“It could not have been in poor health, it could have been an old whale or it could have been hit by a boat,” he said.
